This weekend was New Hampshire Maple Weekend. Maple Syrup makers across the state opened their doors to the public. We visited Folsom’s Sugar House in Chester, NH.
In southern New Hampshire, sugar season starts in mid-to-late February and generally lasts through March. This is the time of year when weather conditions will cause the sap to “run”. Warm days of 40? coupled with cold nights in the 20′s are ideal to get the sap flowing in the trees.
Here is a short video clip from inside the sugar house:
Today we took a trip to Portland, Maine. We had lovely weather albeit with a little winter chill in the air! On the way there we stopped for a coffee and I snapped a lovely stereotypical picture of a police car outside a Dunkin Donut’s, an all too familiar scene!
It took us around an hour to get to Portland. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly Maine lobster!
We had a nice walk around Commercial Street which overlooks a number of busy piers. I snapped this picture of some lobster traps on one of the piers.
The highlight of our trip to Portland was our trip to Fort Williams Park to see the oldest lightouse in Maine, the Portland Head Light. We had no idea it even existed until we picked up a tourist map in one of Commercial Street’s souvenir shops. Here are some images:
Ram Island Ledge Light can also be seen from Fort Williams park. It was built in 1905.
We then made our way back home. It was a lovely day out and we cant wait to visit again soon. Perhaps a summer picnic in the park?
Spring is in the air. The temperatures are slowly rising and the snow has mostly melted away.
It’s been a busy few weeks, the Subaru broke beyond economical repair so we had to buy a new one (a 2006 Subaru Outback). I got a job, nice and local, very similar to what I was doing in the UK. We are also looking at going away for July 4th weekend and hope to find something nice and affordable. We are also still struggling to get our wedding pictures from our photographer! I am hoping this will all get resolved in the next week or so.
This weekend we are planning to take a trip to Portland. I have not used my camera much this past month so I am itching to get back into photography mode and take some nice photos up in Maine!
Twitpic – I am starting to put some photos up on Twitpic. Twitpic is a great site for posting quick images on twitter. If you dont follow me on twitter then my past images can be found here but the best way to see updates is to follow me on twitter.
That’s all for now. I have promised myself that I will post more regularly from here on in!
I will leave you with an image I took on my work phone two days ago while out for a walk. It shows what is hopefully the last of the snow of the season (yeah right)!
