This morning we took a drive to York, Maine with the dog. We stopped off at a few places around York, the first of which I took this photo of a beautiful cherry blossom. They are in bloom all over New England right now. The one pictured is actually in the York rest area!

We spent most of our time at York Harbor, not far from where we had our wedding reception. There was a new trail near the wiggly bridge which took us past Sayward-Wheeler House.

The bridge over York Harbor.

Sayward-Wheeler House.

Toffee under the bridge.

We then crossed the street and walked across the wiggly bridge, so called because it wiggles when you walk across it much to the dogs dissatisfaction…

A lobster boat and a dock full of lobster traps.

The other side of the wiggly bridge is Steedman Woods, a nice trail.

On the trail.

The wiggly bridge as seen from the woods. On the return journey it took us some coaxing to get the dog across.

Two NASA ships, “Freedom Star” and “Liberty Star” are currently docked at Portsmouth Harbor. The ships are due to support the upcoming SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket which is due to take cargo and supplies to the ISS. The launch is scheduled for May 7th at which point the two vessels will be 400 miles off the coast using their Doppler radar to track the rocket. The ships were formally used to retrieve the space shuttles solid rocket boosters from the Atlantic following an STS launch.

I took a drive down last night but the light was fading pretty rapidly so returned tonight and grabbed some much better shots. Last night I was positioned across the river in Kittery, Maine looking back towards Portsmouth, but today I walked out onto the bridge on the Portsmouth side and got some good shots of the vessels from above.

The bridge closed shortly after i had arrived to allow a barge to pass underneath its raised center section. It allowed me to take this picture of the empty Sarah Mildred Long bridge!

I am standing on the Portsmouth, New Hampshire side of the bridge, the vehicles pictured below are on the Kittery, Maine side.

This past weekend Meghan treated me to a long weekend up in Errol, NH in New Hampshire’s Great North Woods. We rented a nice cabin on Lake Umbagog just feet away from the NH-Maine Border.

The primary reason for the trip other than to relax and be as far away from work as possible was to spot our favourite woodland animals, the moose! In total we saw 10 moose and although my favourite lens was broken (a reason why I have not posted in so long) and the weather was not the greatest, I still managed some half decent photos.

It’s a shame the picture doesn’t convey the amazing smell of pine trees when entering the woods:

Our cabin for the weekend, overlooking Lake Umbagog:

A view from the desk of our cabin:

A perfect view to watch and relax:

A beaver swimming past our cabin:

We drove up to Pittsburg (on the international border) on Sunday and saw an amazing freezing fog which which had formed ice over trees.

This log had floated up at the 3rd Connecticut lake. You can see the teeth marks at the end from a beaver.

Back down in Errol to see more moose. This one is a bull moose crossing behind a car.

We stopped by Sunday River Covered Bridge in Bethel, Maine on our way back home on Monday. It was built in 1872:

Unfortunately due to substandard breeding laws in the south and no requirement to get dogs spayed or neutered it leads to a high population of unwanted dogs ending up in “High Kill Shelters” where they are lucky to last a week before being put down if someone does not come forward and rescue them. Unfortunately a lot of these shelters will “clean house” right before Christmas so they do not have to look after them during the holiday period.

We drove up to the dogs temporary foster home in Camden, Maine to see it before adopting and were not disappointed!

She has been with us now for 10 days and has settled in nicely. She currently sleeps in a crate in our room and gets plenty of walks and exercise during the day. She travels well in the car and aside from a couple of accidents she is well potty trained.

We called her “Toffee”. Here are some pictures and video of the new addition to our household!

It was a busy morning before work today. I left the house early to catch a 747 (N820SA) take off from Pease for Dover AFB in Delaware. Then, on my way back into the office I spotted a couple of deer and some turkeys!

When I arrived at the air base/wildlife refuge the light was was still pretty poor. I HDR’ed the first two pictures of the 747 to make them a little more interesting.

The deer crossed the road in front of me and posed for a few seconds before hurriedly hopping off into the woods…. it is hunting season after all.

These turkeys were in a much larger group but again, they had moved away too quickly to get a shot of them all.

Yesterday, we took a drive down the famous Kancamagus highway from North Conway to Lincoln to check out the fall foliage. The foliage on the higher elevations was past peak but was still very good in other areas. We stopped at the entrance to Loon Mountain to take the majority of my foliage pictures.

This bridge is at Lake Chocorua in Tamworth, NH. We always stop here on the way up to the white mountains.
