Winter in Portsmouth

It’s been very wintery here the last week. 3 snow storms have brought a large amount of snow and the next few days are going to be very cold with a maximum temperature on Monday of only 7F (-14C) and a low of -13F (-25c). We went for a walk around Portsmouth yesterday and I took some winter photos of the port city.

Keene Ice and Snow Festival

This weekend we were back in the Monadnock region. It was bitterly cold but Keene’s Ice and Snow Festival was underway so had a little walk around to see some of the ice sculptures. When we passed through town in the morning the sculptors were just starting their work but when we returned in the evening we saw and photographed some of the finished works of art.

Frozen Lake Winnipesaukee

During the winter months, the boats on Lake Winnipesaukee are replaced for cars, snowmobiles and even aircraft! We went for a 64 mile drive around the frozen lake and finished the journey off in Alton at the southern tip to watch the winter fun!

New Year’s Day

We love walking around downtown Portsmouth. The city has plenty of New England charm and beauty. Last night was the traditional “First Night” celebrations and outside the North Church were ice sculptures. So while everyone else nursed their New Years hangovers, we grabbed coffees from Popovers and took a walk around town.

Ice Storm

On Thursday night we had a big ice storm which knocked out power to over 1 million people in New England. A state of emergency was declared in Massachusetts, Maine, New York and right here in New Hampshire.

Luckily our apartment was one of the only parts of our town to retain power, however we lost our Cable TV, Internet and telephone service from Friday morning until Sunday evening (a few hours ago). The power losses were caused by heavy trees coming down under the sheer weight of the ice. As I type, there are still 200,000 homes in New Hampshire without power. More than 500 power crews have lent support to New Hampshire from other states as well as Canada.

We were very lucky to have kept our power as I can only imagine what a struggle it would have been without it! We had a drive around and most of the traffic lights were out and pretty much every business was closed throughout the weekend. The privileged few with generators managed to stay open during the blackout.
