We woke up early to try for one last time to see some moose but again were unsuccessful. The only other time we did not see moose was around the same time last year so we may lower our expectations next time we return towards the fall season!

The weather was overcast but we saw a glimmer of a sunrise over the 2nd Connecticut Lake.

Just before leaving for home we stopped off in the center of town to go to the Lake Francis General store.

Overall it was a nice vacation albeit we left a little disappointed that we did not see any moose. As we passed back through the white mountains on our way home Meghan spotted a bear drinking from a river at Franconia Notch! We turned around to stop and take a photo but it was unfortunately too late!

We were up in the White Mountains at the weekend to go leaf peeping on the Kancamagus Highway. Unfortunately the colour had pretty much turned already but the trip was not a total waste. We visited the Squam Lake Science Center in Holderness, NH. The center contains live animal exhibits and a great hike up to the top of Mount Fayal. All the animals in captivity at the center can be found in the New Hampshire wild which made it all the more interesting.

Red Fox:

White Tailed Deer:

Mountain Lion:

Bobcats:

Great Horned Owl:

Red Tailed Hawk:

Red Tailed Hawk:

Bald Eagle:

Black Bear:

After seeing the animal exhibits and waiting around for the black bear to wake up from underneath the tree (which he didn’t), we hiked up Mount Fayal.

Fall colour along the way:

The view from the summit was well worth the hike:

Yesterday we got back from a 3 day trip to Pittsburg, NH that Meghan had booked for my 30th birthday. Pittsburg is the northernmost town in New Hampshire and borders with Canada. It is a popular location for snowmobiling, fishing, kayaking, boating, hiking, hunting and all sorts of outdoor activities. We spent our nights at the Cabins at Lopstick and our days taking in the sights and spotting moose and deer!

We spent a lot of time on Route 3 between Pittsburg and the Canadian border, known to locals as “Moose Alley” for its frequent moose sightings. Moose Alley lived up to its name as we saw 16 moose along the roadside during our 2 night stay. We saw the last moose of our trip “number 17” on Route 16 south of Errol NH on our way home.

All in all it was a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend in New Hampshire’s Great North Woods.

Here are some pictures from our weekend away and a video clip.

A nice welcome gesture from the cabins. I wonder who told them?

Route 3 – Moose Alley

A friendly Gray Jay swooped a couple of times to get my attention and then posed for a photo!

A moose keeps a watchful eye on us as it drinks from a roadside bog.

Our cabin for the weekend at Lopstick. The aptly named “Moose” cabin.

The view from our cabin. We couldn’t have asked for better.

Even the spring colour in New England is impressive.

Caution! Active Moose Crossing. This sign was feet away from the U.S. border entry point.

A reminder of why the above signs are posted all down Route 3.

After a long days moose watching we fired up the BBQ.

A covered bridge. A familiar sight throughout New England.

A picturesque graveyard.

Dusk at the 2nd Connecticut Lake.

And finally, a video clip of my birthday weekend away:

We took a scenic drive up to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, a great way of seeing Lake Winnipesaukee.

Also in Moultonborough is a very picturesque airfield. We stopped for a while to see this light aircraft take off.

After a visit to the “must see” Old Country Store, and a delicious lunch at Harts Turkey Farm Restaurant, we took a drive down the west side of the lake through Alton before returning home to the seacoast.

Here are a few videos I took with my mobile phone whilst in the Lake District last week.

This clip shows Wastwater, a beautiful lake in the Wasdale Valley. Wastwater is 3 miles long and a third of a mile wide and the deepest of all the lakes. I was sat at the bottom of the lake in the grounds of the youth hostel who kindly allowed me to park in their car park while I spent time photographing the lake.

The second clip contains the three waterfalls (or “forces” as they are known locally) we visited whilst in the Lake District.

The first is Aira Force, situated on land owned by the National Trust. We visited this fall on the first day of our 4 day trip. It is about a 5-10 minute walk from the National Trust car park. You can pass over the bridge above the waterfall and descend via a path to the pool at the bottom.

The second waterfall is Stock Ghyll Force which is located in Ambleside. It was only a 15 minute walk from our hotel and a couple of minutes walk from the entrance gate, making it a very convenient fall to visit.

The final waterfall is Stanley Ghyll Force in Eskdale. This fall is great but the walk along the river to the fall was more impressive. The woodland area along the river and surrounding the fall is extremely lush and beautiful but unfortunately not captured here in my rather washed out video clip! You cross over a couple of wooden bridges and up some quite hazardous steps before walking along a narrow path to reach the waterfall.

I will be posting my photos from the Lake District to my flickr page in the next couple of weeks.
