Bird, Deer and Turkey

It was a busy morning before work today. I left the house early to catch a 747 (N820SA) take off from Pease for Dover AFB in Delaware. Then, on my way back into the office I spotted a couple of deer and some turkeys!

When I arrived at the air base/wildlife refuge the light was was still pretty poor. I HDR’ed the first two pictures of the 747 to make them a little more interesting.

The deer crossed the road in front of me and posed for a few seconds before hurriedly hopping off into the woods…. it is hunting season after all.

These turkeys were in a much larger group but again, they had moved away too quickly to get a shot of them all.

More Foliage at Pease

The foliage at Pease is looking pretty good still. These trees were all yellow a few days ago but are now orange turning to brown. The overcast skies naturally saturated the colors and made for some nice photos. It was peaceful taking pictures in the light rain, except for the occasional C-5 overhead doing touch and go’s!

The foliage around the airport is currently looking very yellow! I stopped at the side of the road and walked into the woods to do some leaf peeping and take some shots with my failing 17-85mm lens. It has been playing up so much recently that I consider myself very lucky to have got these photos.

Yesterday, we took a drive down the famous Kancamagus highway from North Conway to Lincoln to check out the fall foliage. The foliage on the higher elevations was past peak but was still very good in other areas. We stopped at the entrance to Loon Mountain to take the majority of my foliage pictures.

This bridge is at Lake Chocorua in Tamworth, NH. We always stop here on the way up to the white mountains.

A Bat at Work

As I arrived at work this morning around 7:45 I was greeted by a bat hanging from the entrance of the office!

It was completely unphased by people arriving for work.

The sun looked huge last night as it set. I took this photo on my way home from Portsmouth.

As we got close to home the sky was full of rays of pink light which looked pretty against the the blue sky. I was a little late taking the picture but you can see the effect in this shot.

On Sunday after the apple picking we spent the afternoon walking around Portsmouth.

Butternut Farm

Sunday was the 10th anniversary of 9/11. All around the state and the country were 9/11 memorials. We went to breakfast in Dover and saw some of the memorial at Henry Law Park.

On our way to Dover we passed a small tribute in our home town.

After the memorial we drove to Butternut Farm in Farmington, NH to go Peach/Nectarine and Apple picking!

Delicious! The farm allows you to eat the fruit as you pick it, they just ask you to contribute to the “clean conscience” container before you leave!

Pittsburg Vacation – Day 3

We woke up early to try for one last time to see some moose but again were unsuccessful. The only other time we did not see moose was around the same time last year so we may lower our expectations next time we return towards the fall season!

The weather was overcast but we saw a glimmer of a sunrise over the 2nd Connecticut Lake.

Just before leaving for home we stopped off in the center of town to go to the Lake Francis General store.

Overall it was a nice vacation albeit we left a little disappointed that we did not see any moose. As we passed back through the white mountains on our way home Meghan spotted a bear drinking from a river at Franconia Notch! We turned around to stop and take a photo but it was unfortunately too late!

Across The Border (Day 2)

In the 8+ times we have been to Pittsburg we have never crossed the border into Canada. This time we brought our passports!

Just past the 3rd Connecticut lake in Pittsburg is the international border. We drove up and across the border and found ourselves in the French-Canadian region of Quebec!

Just across the border the relatively flat road we had traveled on in Pittsburg for the last 13 miles turned into a big downward hill in Chartierville! This hill is called “Magnetic Hill” and is so called because of the optical illusion that occurs when driving downhill that makes you look as if you are getting pulled up the hill.

Yes, we get it…. We have to use the numbers on the inside of the speedometer now…..

The landscape changes from woods and moose south of the border to fields and cows north of the border.

And then came the weather…. It went from a beautiful sunny day to very windy and very heavy rain. So much so that I had to pull over and remove the branch of a tree from my wheel arch.

Aside from the occasional Canadian flag…. and Quebec flags I have to say, far out number them, I would not have been able to distinguish the region from one in France.
