Bird, Deer and Turkey

It was a busy morning before work today. I left the house early to catch a 747 (N820SA) take off from Pease for Dover AFB in Delaware. Then, on my way back into the office I spotted a couple of deer and some turkeys!

When I arrived at the air base/wildlife refuge the light was was still pretty poor. I HDR’ed the first two pictures of the 747 to make them a little more interesting.

The deer crossed the road in front of me and posed for a few seconds before hurriedly hopping off into the woods…. it is hunting season after all.

These turkeys were in a much larger group but again, they had moved away too quickly to get a shot of them all.

Yellow Foliage at Pease

The foliage around the airport is currently looking very yellow! I stopped at the side of the road and walked into the woods to do some leaf peeping and take some shots with my failing 17-85mm lens. It has been playing up so much recently that I consider myself very lucky to have got these photos.

A Bat at Work

As I arrived at work this morning around 7:45 I was greeted by a bat hanging from the entrance of the office!

It was completely unphased by people arriving for work.

Interesting Sunset

The sun looked huge last night as it set. I took this photo on my way home from Portsmouth.

As we got close to home the sky was full of rays of pink light which looked pretty against the the blue sky. I was a little late taking the picture but you can see the effect in this shot.

Closed Memorial Bridge

The Memorial Bridge which links Portsmouth, NH to Kittery, ME closed several weeks ago following another failed safety check. The bridge is now condemned and will be replaced by another bridge by 2014. For now the bridge is open to foot traffic and provides a lovely peaceful walk across the river to Maine which great views of the other two bridges and the Naval Shipyard.

Pease at Night

Last night was probably one of the warmest nights of the year so far. We picked up a couple of salads and had them at the air base as the light started to fade. 4 KC-135′s were doing circuits which gave me plenty of opportunity to try out some long exposure shots.

This first shot is actually a combination of two exposures of 30 seconds each. This was taken during the best light of the evening.

This second shot was a 102 second exposure which was actually not nearly enough time to let the right amount of light in. I had to do some work in the RAW converter to get this looking brighter.

As the evenings get warmer I intend to try some more long exposure shots.

Thunderbirds Coming to NH

The USAF Thunderbirds paid a visit to NH today ahead of the the Portsmouth International Air Show this summer. One of the Thunderbirds arrived at Portsmouth just before 2pm and did a flyby before coming back around for a high speed pass. It then landed to hold a promotional press conference.

I parked up at the start of Rwy 34 at the entrance to the golf club. It was bitterly cold but my knuckles held out long enough to get some good photos.

A couple of KC-135 were doing some crosswind landings ahead of the Thunderbirds visit.

After the KC-135′s landed the F-16 appeared…

Can’t wait for this years’ air show! August 13th and 14th 2011.

Winter in Portsmouth

It’s been very wintery here the last week. 3 snow storms have brought a large amount of snow and the next few days are going to be very cold with a maximum temperature on Monday of only 7F (-14C) and a low of -13F (-25c). We went for a walk around Portsmouth yesterday and I took some winter photos of the port city.

Downtown Portsmouth Colour

The colour is peaking in the seacoast area and although a lot of leaves have fallen to the ground, there is still a lot of colour on the trees. At lunch I had a walk around the Strawbery Banke area of downtown Portsmouth to take some photos.
