Kancamagus and Loon

We visited the White Mountains on Saturday to drive the scenic Kancamagus highway. The highway is 26 miles in length and runs from East to West through the White Mountains. I was a little surprised at how much snow was still on the highway but it made for some nice pictures. We were hoping to see a moose as the highway is famous for moose sightings but this time it wasn’t to be. When we reached the Lincoln side of the highway we stopped to watch the skiers taking full advantage of the long ski season.

Snow Storm Feeding

This morning started with another winter snow storm. The bird feeder was very active and the birds did not seem to care at all. I recently hanged the squirrel proof feeder and filled it with black oil sunflower seeds to try and tempt some Chickadee’s into my new bird house. Hopefully they will use it this spring!

Thunderbirds Coming to NH

The USAF Thunderbirds paid a visit to NH today ahead of the the Portsmouth International Air Show this summer. One of the Thunderbirds arrived at Portsmouth just before 2pm and did a flyby before coming back around for a high speed pass. It then landed to hold a promotional press conference.

I parked up at the start of Rwy 34 at the entrance to the golf club. It was bitterly cold but my knuckles held out long enough to get some good photos.

A couple of KC-135 were doing some crosswind landings ahead of the Thunderbirds visit.

After the KC-135′s landed the F-16 appeared…

Can’t wait for this years’ air show! August 13th and 14th 2011.

Red Cardinal

We got another 5 inches of snow yesterday so after I was done clearing the driveway this morning I caught sight of this bird on the feeder as I left for work. It’s a male red cardinal and it’s bright colours looked particularly vivid against the snowy background. I scrambled to get my camera out and my telephoto lens fitted. The result was a pretty blurry and grainy picture but after a resize for the blog it looked pretty good.

Winter in Portsmouth

It’s been very wintery here the last week. 3 snow storms have brought a large amount of snow and the next few days are going to be very cold with a maximum temperature on Monday of only 7F (-14C) and a low of -13F (-25c). We went for a walk around Portsmouth yesterday and I took some winter photos of the port city.

First Snowfall of 2011

I worked from home today while we had our first major snowstorm of the year. Around 18 inches of snow fell and gave me the opportunity to try my new snow blower!

Keene Ice and Snow Festival

This weekend we were back in the Monadnock region. It was bitterly cold but Keene’s Ice and Snow Festival was underway so had a little walk around to see some of the ice sculptures. When we passed through town in the morning the sculptors were just starting their work but when we returned in the evening we saw and photographed some of the finished works of art.

Winter Walk at Great Bay Wildlife Refuge

I am fortunate enough to work and live near some great trails and walks. One such walk is at the Great Bay Wildlife Refuge which is around a 10 minute drive from my work. On Tuesday last week I drove down there during a snow storm to take some pictures and video. We returned on Saturday when the weather was a lot nicer to walk the ‘Peverly Pond Trail’. The trail takes you in a loop out to Peverly Pond where there is a lookout spot for nature watchers. This time of year the pond is frozen over.

Frozen Lake Winnipesaukee

During the winter months, the boats on Lake Winnipesaukee are replaced for cars, snowmobiles and even aircraft! We went for a 64 mile drive around the frozen lake and finished the journey off in Alton at the southern tip to watch the winter fun!

Christmas Day

This year we spent Christmas at Meghan’s parents. We drove out on Christmas Eve and returned back to Dover in the afternoon of Christmas Day. We woke up on Christmas Day to some fresh snowfall which made for some nice photo opportunities.
