The moon looked impressive on our way back home last night. It was low in the sky which made it appear bigger than usual. I pulled into the car park of a local gym and took this picture.

Fall Foliage in The Great North Woods

The fall foliage in the Great North Woods generally peaks a couple of weeks before the White Mountains. I had heard on NH.com that the colour up there was peaking right now so we booked an Anniversary trip to Pittsburg to spot moose and do some leaf peeping while we were there!

As we passed through the white mountains it was evident that the leaves were starting to turn. In another week to two weeks it should be peaking.

The city of Berlin, NH is one of the first towns as you enter the Great North Woods. The colour here was pretty much peaking.

The sun disappeared at this point and the weather stayed gray and overcast for the rest of the weekend.

The colour along “Moose Alley” (Route 3) was spectacular. We only saw 6 moose on this trip but on this occasion the colour was the highlight of the weekend.

At the northern end of “Moose Alley” is the Canadian Border. Previously they allowed cars to turn around at the border entry point but this new sign has been placed at the 3rd Connecticut Lake for turnarounds. I am assuming you are still allowed to continue on to the border and park if you want to do the hike to the 4th Connecticut lake which starts behind the US Border house.

Our trip to Pittsburg, NH was certainly the prettiest one so far. The fall colour was spectacular and very hard to portray easily using photographs. We only saw 4 moose on this occasion. Bull moose are fully racked at this time of the year so it would have been great to have seen and photographed one. That coupled with the amazing colour would have made for a very nice photo! We shall try again next year I am sure and there is still a chance I might see one along the Kancamagus Highway before the fall is done.

Wild Flowers and Changing Colours

I took a drive on Arboretum Drive at lunch which leads to the Great Bay Wildlife Refuge. I came across a patch of wild flowers growing and stopped to take some photos.

This tree had leaves which were half red and half yellow as well as some that were still green.

Winter Walk at Great Bay Wildlife Refuge

I am fortunate enough to work and live near some great trails and walks. One such walk is at the Great Bay Wildlife Refuge which is around a 10 minute drive from my work. On Tuesday last week I drove down there during a snow storm to take some pictures and video. We returned on Saturday when the weather was a lot nicer to walk the ‘Peverly Pond Trail’. The trail takes you in a loop out to Peverly Pond where there is a lookout spot for nature watchers. This time of year the pond is frozen over.

First Snow

The first significant snow of the year fell on Saturday night into Sunday morning. We went for a walk in the morning and took some video and photos:

Seacoast Fall Foliage in HD

Here is a short HD video clip of the fall foliage in the area. The colour has moved past peak in the last week but there are still some out there! Again, I am new to shooting in HD so some of the focus is a little off in the first couple of scenes.

Fall Colour in Monadnock Region

The Monadnock region of NH was near peak colour last weekend so I headed out to try and capture some of it. On Sunday morning while Meghan was at church I went to Ashuelot River Park in Keene. The weather was not great, pretty overcast following a day of rain on Saturday.

Later in the day the weather perked up and we drove around and took a few more photos, including some at Goose Pond.

Peak colour is coming soon to the seacoast area. Now when is my new camera going to arrive!
